Peevy’s Polar Pipeline refreshments at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and its architectural influence; Fire Station No. 1, 2230 Pasadena Avenue, Lincoln Heights, CA. The archival portion of this image is courtesy of the Los Angeles Fire Department, LAFire.com
Fire Station No. 1 was built in 1941 and is an example of streamline moderne architecture. The station is still in service today and can be seen here on Google Street View.
Historical Photomerge Process
Like all the other merges in this series, this location presented special challenges. The real life fire station is much larger with different proportions. I decided to retain the bottom of the fire station because of the vintage vehicles and firemen. I also didn’t care for the lamppost in the modern Disney shot. I manipulated the area above the door to the right in the archival photo to be proportionate with the Disney facade to help blend them together. With a little bit of Photoshop magic I retained both archival and modern marquees.
In real life the billboard over the Disney facade features characters from the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit. That image was replaced with another billboard from Hollywood Boulevard to avoid legal issues.
