Historical Photomerge: Armory

Elkhart Armory historical photography by Fine PhotoGraphics

Originally built in 1906, this property after hosting several businesses now lies vacant. Archival image courtesy of the Elkhart Public Library, Elkhart Indiana.

The local community has an active Facebook fan page where they recall shopping at the A&P grocery store once located there and skating on the second floor skating rink.

Historical Photomerge is my spin on the traditional “then-and-now” photo concept. Normally you might see photos of the same location side by side, sometimes from slightly different angles. Historical Photomerge seamlessly weaves together a historical archival photograph with a modern one to produce a thought provoking image.

Historical Photomerge is ideal for a smartphone or cellphone walking tour. Images are also useful for historic preservation by showing both the history and future potential of an endangered property.

Update: March 2013. Part of the armory roof has now collapsed and the city of Elkhart is offering to sell the building for $1 to a qualified buyer. So far there have been no serious candidates so we fear the building will be demolished within weeks unless there is intervention. The latest details appear in this article in The Elkhart Truth.

Update: August 2013. Sadly the armory has been demolished.
